Some chess programs use a mixture of both:
x seconds to guess a strong move for the opponent,
and after that thinking about the best answer on x.

Hmm, on which board size(s) have your tests been?

Perhaps, you might see an effect (or see a more expressed effect)
for smaller boards (7x7 or 9x9). Indeed, their should be some scaling:
Decreasing effect when the board size grows.
