An iPod uses an iTunesDB file to store all information about its music and playlists. Most importantly, the iTunesDB file associates song titles with files in the iPod's filesystem. So dont do that!! What type of ipod is it? If its a new model this is going to be hard a classic, new nano or touch. If it is an older model you can get software to backup your ipods contents from download.com.
