I agree with Davey on this subject, I know it has been a bit since we visited this post, but I thought it would be good to view the advantages and disadvantages to each one.
Put simply, a 64-bit PC can handle larger amounts of information than a 32-bit system. Since it can use more RAM—4 GB and up—a 64-bit computer can be more responsive when you're running lots of programs at once. But on a normal budget system the 32-bit OS will benchmark better since it uses less resources out of the box. It all comes down to what you need really. A lot of programs created in the past will run with "hiccups" on 64- bit systems. My system I run at home is a Quad-Core 64 bit with 4GB of OC memory. I use Windows XP 32-bit and even though Windows doesn't show I have 4GB of memory in the computer info I still know that my BIOS and msinfo32 read it as 4GB and my assumptions of benchmarking I believe that Windows is still utilizing all 4GB of my memory... I have always argued XP over Vista for the simple fact of XP only requiring 64MB of memory from a fresh install versus at least (and I stress at least) 512MB of memory. That is a BIG JUMP from one OS to another. Think about core components of each OS and one taking up EIGHT times as much memory as the other. I must say that Windows 7 doesn't show any help in this department since the "Microsoft requirements" state 32-bit is 1GB of memory and 64-bit is 2GB of memory. I guess as time goes on the demand for MORE and FASTER gets well...MORE and FASTER. In a nutshell I have tried EVERY (and I mean every) version of windows since DOS and Windows 3.0 For networking I like Windows 2000 the best, and for Home/gaming I like XP or windows 7.... Basically I rambled on for nothing but only to wake me up, I would still stick with XP or Windows 7 32-bit if you are going to do home use, music, email, DVDs, etc. (even gaming) If you are a video editor or want to run a home server then go with 64 bit and use either an Ultimate / Professional version or server version. Let me know if anyone has questions or comments, I am up for any other opinions. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Computer Tech Support" group.
