Look, first of all 256MB rams could start windows xp, but it will start to get slow when you start to run more than one program at a time, due to the excessive use of virtual memory. Second, if the manual or w/e says 512MB is max, then probably that's the max you can get, it's not a setting you can change or anything, it's usually the hardware limitations that force you to use these limits. Third, such an old computer probably use SDRAM which i belive is no longer produced, if you happen to find any, it's going to be used, old and expensive, cause it's rare. Fourth, this is just an advice, if you can buy a new laptop i'd suggest to do so, it's not really worth doing all this for a 800Mhz pc, if you really don't need processing power that much, you probably will find a cheap celeron laptop or something.
