Yes, you are correct, Apple Lossless is the only format not playable. Other
formats will play.
And even there I screwed up. I shouldn't have included the Nano. Apple
Lossless
plays fine on the Nano. It's the Shuffle that Apple Lossless doesn't play.

Just want to clarify this statement. My first reading was that AAC is the
ONLY mode which the Nano or Shuffle can handle. But I think you only meant
Lossless is not. Certainly they can handle MP3 formats as well.
Also, if you have ripped CDs in the WMA format (i.e. you used Windows
Media Player before), iTunes will automatically convert to AAC when you
use File ==> Add Folder to Library.
