I think you must be right. As an experiment, I pulled the plug on the
computer. The PC went into standby even tho the battery backup should
have powered the system. After plugging back in, a "critical battery"
message appeared.
The communication link between the computer and the APC quit working a
year or two ago, so that the computer is powered by the APC until the
battery is dead.

threshold) or your batteries are old and are not holding a change long

Plus check your buttons on your backup. Sometimes it gets switched
and does not switch back when the power comes back on.
