Also, it's really tough to raise your prices once you're established with a client, so it's better to get started on the rate you want to be locked into, more or less.

Don't make the mistake I made when I was a beginning professional photographer. Don't think you're only worth what a burger flipper makes. Charge high, very high! Either get it or turn it down and keep your prices high. When they pay it, it will make up for the jobs you loose and the headaches from the nit pickers who want the world for a dime. If they want you, they obviously have a reason. Make sure they pay for what they want.

I don't see how an independent contractor could charge much less than $30/hr and still make a living, given all the added costs and down time.
