I can't recommend much else because I have no idea why you've got so

I'm not sure that I understand your recommendation.

According to Belarc Advisor, I have about 1.3 terabytes of hard drive storage. "Why so many drives" is that my PC computer will accept only 3 internal hard drives (bays), and only two of these may be SATA. As my disk space ran out, I purchased additional external hard drives with either USB 2.0 or IEEE 1394 interfaces. Right now I am running out of disk space and thinking that either I have to clean older files or buy another large hard drive. I guess that your "consolidation" means to delete files.

I have decided to reformat the F: drive. I still don't know why a good drive should suddenly be an unformatted drive. I am currently restoring all files from 3 months ago from a backup on another (external) drive.

For those who have large and important files that need to be kept, is there a better way of backing up than I am doing? With so much data, is there an alternative -- maybe BlueRay disks?

BTW, I investigated replacing the F: drive (the one that suddenly became unformatted) with a newer 750 GB drive. I will wait until I see if the reformat and restore of my F: drive goes OK, or if not I will replace it.

A week or more ago, I noticed that the desktop icon for internal drive F
was missing. I reinstalled the shortcut using My Computer (Windows XP

Now trying to access the drive F, I get this message from Windows: "The
disk drive in F is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?"

I have 5 hard drives: 2 internal (including F), three external. Here's
what Belarc Advisor says:
