Hard drives can and do fail suddenly and without warning. But your backup
strategy seems to consist entirely of adding more hard drives! This is
certainly incorrect, but you don't need to wait for blu-ray; use DVDs like
the rest of us do. Any good compression program (e.g. 7zip) will split large
files so they can span multiple disks.

I understand that for some work you may need lots of online storage. That's
why I asked *why* you needed all those drives. Really, you only need two -
one for Windows, one for data and to write daily image backups of Windows
to. These can both be internal. There's nothing wrong with having two
externals for your monthly backups, just remember to keep alternate ones
off-premises. If one loses formatting, chances are it won't matter.
