To clarify what I wrote earlier, if my every word was an order I
would be a bad manager. I expect my staff to respond to clients'
needs as well as to mine and clients usually come first. So "could"
conveys the understanding that staff apply good judgement. I would
not be happy to be told that a big order was turned away at 4:30
because staff were too busy delinting seats. Maybe in a union shop
you have less flexibility.

Well, I have the best staff on the planet, for the mission. I am comfortable
as a manager with any of them assuming command in my absence.

As assigned, of course.

I don't think they all have my same management style, but they share
my priorities and they know the mission.

And that is a good thing.
