Ethernet to the router is easiest because there are fewer variables to worry about simultaneously. I usually do this first to get the basics working before adding complexity. USB to the Airport should work okay if you have all the parts working okay before you connect this up. Connecting through a Mac is a bad idea because the Mac has to be on in order to print and any problems with that Mac will keep others from printing.
