There are been problems with the Google toolbar and IE. FF is my
primary browser and because of the IE problems (it's the standard at
work) with the Google Toolbar, I don't use it for FF.

If you've got it (the Google toolbar) installed, uninstall it for both
FF and IE and see what happens.

Google's "fix" is to disable the page-rank - although on most systems,
that's already been done. Their other "fix" is to install the beta
version.

On one system here, I uninstalled the Google toolbar and downloaded the
newest (non-beta) version. That came with a separate Google Updater
program that is somewhat nicer but still pretty intrusive (IMHO). A
former co-worker and overall good geek says he's given up on the google
toolbar and recommends removing it from any system.

Subject: [CGUYS] Firefox - slow and freezing up

For the past several months using FF has led to multiple freezes per day
and often very slow loading. Has got so bad that I've gone back to IE
(actually go back and forth between the two), though it, too, sometimes
loads slow and occasionally freezes. The FF problem seemed to begin or
at least significantly worsen around the time I switched from Comcast to
RCN (though RCN says it has nothing to do with this and that I'm getting
3 to 4 or so Meg download speeds) and simultaneously started using
Gmail. Are either of these things likely culprits? Gmail often takes
long to load and sometimes freezes, for instance. Running Windows XP on
a pretty fast desktop, 1 mg ram. Any suggestions? Slight but seemingly
temporary improvement when I reset settings for FF, like for cookies.
Think I reset to default options. Running Windows Defender, still free
AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm free firewall, with Windows firewall turned
off. Think I might be automatically running some antispyware software
as well, but have to check.

Thanks for any thoughts on this, except for suggesting that I buy a Mac,
which I presently cannot afford to do.

Frustrated with Fickle Firefox,

Randall
