I don't know about the iphone in Asia but 18 months ago I took my
unlocked T-mobile Samsung GSM flip phone to Thailand and Laos and could
buy a $5 dollar SIM card (with $5 of minutes credit) in a kiosk in most
any grocery store etc and then similarly recharged that $5 or $10 a pop
at any convenience stand when I needed to. Could not have been easier.
Made our similar purchases via a cell carrier customer service center or
"walk-a-mile across the parking lot and thru a US mega-grocery/ Mall
Best Buy chain store look like Soviet era style "bizness."
Every tuk-tuk (moped taxi) driver and longboat driver had one and they
didn't have much else.
In my mind, they sure know how to make it work and "keep it simple".

Yeah, but they have to stand in long iPhone data plan lines to get it. Then
they have to go stand in the voice plan line. I don't even want to think
about the accessories line.

I just read that iPhone service plans with unlimited data start at $24
USD in Hong Kong. That is about 1/4 of the lowest US price.
That's what we mean by being losers.
