Furthermore, we have 2 at&t fones (my trusty old razrV3 original model and
my wife's spiffy new samsung sgh-a707 "sync" ...it's red!!) ...she uses none
of the features at all except the camera and calls ...she had me shut off
voicemail and internet and messages... I use everything sadly only GPRS
...both are "quad band." We went to the EU recently and AT&T cheerfully
(yes, cheerfully) sent detailed and simple email to unlock the 2 phones
which went fine without a hitch. In the EU we simply went into a phone shop
and purchased 2 pay&go cards (in our case Proximus=like Tmobile) with
minutes. They were working instantly with our phones. We were able to add
minutes (we did it at the supermarket checkout register while shopping) but
one can do it online or via phone if you have a debit card in the EU...we
didn't. My razrV3 could do WAP but I didn't use it much. My wife never did
any of that...both phones did messages with aplomb. We were thrilled. Our
cards are in my desk drawer as they remain active for a year. In the plane,
I stuck the at&t sims back in and we were able to call our ride from the
line waiting for the passport guy...easy as pie!! ...oh, yeah...reception
was spectacular pegged at 5 bars in little burgs in the backwaters ...in the
area we travelled, only the caller pays, recipient pays nothing...even if
the card is out of minutes, you can get called. You MUST have a quad band
fone for this as the EU uses the 2 other bands not used in the usa!! Set
the thing to auto select the network and you're in business!!

Not a feature, what's missing is unlocked universal use.  Tied to ATT (same
model overseas, tied to one carrier), the iPhone is useful only to those who
wish to spend, rather than use.  That's the problem, Tom.  Betty is trying
to get there without shackles.

Making a list like this and leaving out iPhone is hopelessly uninformed.
The iPhone runs circles around the stodgy WinCE/PocketPC/WindowsMobile.

So let's return to Betty's original question with some specificity. What
features did you find missing from the iPhone?
