I' told the hard drive on new MacBooks is easy to get to and swap out. (It was not easy on older iBooks, but when I said that here a few months ago I was shown to be wrong.) Why not ask the "genius" to show you?

Get a new drive from Newegg for not a lot of money.

It's pretty easy, so easy you can almost do it with your eyes closed
[compared to the iBook].

Better yet, have your wife take it in to the genius bar. She can sweetly
ask them to show her how it's done. Might get them to do it free. Worked for
a friend who needed to change the battery in a CRT iMac. You could try
asking them to show you; just depends on who's working there today. But
you'll save a lot if you buy a drive from OWC or Newegg and install it yourself.
