Humorous story: Michelle Rhee, the DC school super, is a former neighbor of mine. She and her family lived across the street from me and my wife when both of our families were just starting out in Silver Spring. Her oldest daughter and my daughter were born within a couple weeks of each other and were fast friends until Michelle and her husband and family moved to be close to her family in Ohio about 2 1/2 years later. We lost touch with them soon after. That was about 6 or 7 years ago. Last year, the Post ran a large story about the new DC school superintendent and I was wondering as they started describing her: Korean, Harvard educated, named Michelle, nah, it couldn't be. So I called my wife over. "Hey hon, is that Michelle from across the street?" Sure enough, it was. She contacted us a few weeks later and my wife met Michelle and her daughters, with my daughter, in Silver Spring for lunch one day. My wife told me afterwards that many African-American women were coming up to her and spontaneously wishing her luck and hoping that she succeeded.
