It could be a DNS matter but Yes ... try the ISP support.
They deal with these specific problems all the time.

I uninstalled AVG, CPU usage dropped to around 2%, yet loading is still slow.

Re. DNS settings, think I have them at what the ISP originally set
them at or said to set them at. Still can't use IE, which used to be
fast when had this problem with FF before. Guess I should re-install
AVG? But what else can I do or try? Call the ISP tech support, which
means not getting anyone until maybe Monday?

I hate to sound ungrateful on Thanksgiving eve, but my computer is once

now it doesn't. Further, can't even seem to use IE as alternative which
worked previously.
Some people are complaining about the virus scanner that FF just added,
but since your IE works crappy too the problem is probably at the system
level.

I recently fixed such sluggishness by changing the DNS servers I was
using. I had been using OpenDNS -- as I and many others on the list have
recommended. But recently OpenDNS has been very sluggish. So I switched
to my ISP's DNS.
