Actually, I have a single folder on the desktop, which contains shortcuts to 
all my apps.  I find it's a lot easier to look for something in the folder, to 
include the usual Windows Search.  But the folder only contains shortcuts for 
launching the principal applications.  Start Menu entries often have a lot of 
accessories for an app, including an uninstall shortcut.

My task bar is "autohide" and is six rows tall.  Two complete rows are the 
quick-launch icons.
