I don't have access to a Vista system, however with XP Pro, there is a distinction between an account the user creates having administrative privileges, vs. "the" Administrator account which I believe is created automatically when Windows is installed. Some brain-dead software will only install under that account. I have some VPN software which required that (or it may have been the corporate version of Symantec, it doesn't really matter). This account won't be listed with the accounts that appear on the usual Windows login screen. To log in, you have to perform a three fingered salute when presented with the log in screen, which should give you a prompt box into which you can manually type the user name "Administrator". You were probably asked to specify the password for this account when you booted your computer for the first time. If you can't remember what password you specified, you are theoretically out of luck, although I believe there are "tools" around that would let you reset the password. Or it's possible you can reset the password when logged in as a user with admin privileges.
Again, I don't know whether any of what I have just said holds for Vista, but maybe it helps.
