I think you are being stubborn over a few pennies and risking losing the entire printer. That is just not a good trade off from my perspective. If you must you can in many cases just pull out the cart and stick it back it. That will reset the counter. You can then drain all the ink, suck air into the tubes, curse for hours trying to clear an air lock, and then buy a new printer.
