On the costs of ink it is way more than a few pennies.
Plus the fact that Epson did not do this originally makes me think it was done to force more ink sales. Plus the fact that they have tried to kill the aftermarket market.
I started off with an Epson Stylus 600 and graduated from there. Canon's also did not stop printing when their ink ran dry. But their disposable print head design turned me off of them.

If you must you can in many cases just pull out the cart and stick it back it. That will reset the counter. You can then drain all the ink, suck air into the tubes, curse for hours trying to clear an air lock, and then buy a new printer. Different strokes for different folks.
