I think you might be ready for a 4-1 Laser combo. Not color mind you but B&W.

Dell does have some very good B&W combo units as do Canon and HP.

If color is an afterthought buy a dedicated color printer for your color stuff.

Copying and such will warrant a laser as that will keep the costs in line.

Scanners can and do go bad on virtually everything.

On the inkjets I think a little faster as they have to compromise on something.

I have a Dell 1600N at work that we have had for three years (at least) main workhorse.

They have changed models now, but they do put out some good 4-1 units.

Look at some in your price range and then consult Cnet.com for reviews of them.

Will give you some real life experience on them.

Yes, I do need a fax. Space is also a consideration; I'm in an apartment

Scanning first to fax seems a bit of a hassle, but maybe not too bad. Why
do you suggest I have both an inkjet and a laser, or am I misunderstanding
you? I guess being able to print photos would be nice but my main need is
simply to print documents, occasionally do significant amount of copying
(though probably not much more than 500 pages a year) and some scanning and
occasional faxing. Do scanners tend to go bad on 4-1s? I was thinking the
thing that would go bad would be the printer. My old, reliable HP b &W
laser printer bought in 94 finally ran out of ink (cartridge replacement is
prohibitive) so have seen how much longer laser cartridges can last than,
say, Dell inkjet cartridges.

Thanks
