VLC is a good choice, good support for a wide variety of codecs out of the box. Codec/containers etc can be extremely confusing especially when you get into subtitle support etc.
You may look at this codec to install: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AC3_Filter.htm Someone else on the list may have an opinion on that, but I always install a base load of codecs on a new system...that's one of them.
