I think that chronology is accurate, but only you're talking strictly about operating systems. Remember that Gates and Allen wrote the Basic interpreter for the Altair in 1975--two years before the Apple II was released and four years before Apple DOS came out. (And for what it's worth, what was by then Microsoft also wrote a 6502 version for Apple.) All this was long before IBM entered the picture.
