There is another problem with this number.
Apple combines their whole operation. Hardware and Software.
You would have to separate out what their profit margin is on the OS,
and what their profit margin is on their hardware (Computer)
MS does not sell computers. They sell an OS, a Suite and other
software, plus some peripherals. But MS is not a hardware
manufacturer except for the Xbox, but that is not a computer.
There are a ton (and I mean that literally) of hardware manufacturers
out there. Some of them are crap.
I have noticed that Foxconn seems to be part of I[pods and makes some
parts for them. In the PC world Foxconn is not one of the better board makers.
Remember the days of Amptron? Emachines?
There are some cheap and dirty PC manufacturers out there. I would
not buy their equipment.
There are some higher end manufacturers and that is who I deal with.
MS and Apple came up with two marketing campaigns, and methods. Bill
decided to sell an OS and let manufacturers design equipment around it.
Steve decided to not only sell an OS but to sell Hardware designed around it.
Both have been successful in what they endeavored to set out to do.
