Actually, I think Jeff had a great idea. Windows 7 RC1 will be available for 
free download on May 5 and will be valid for a full year, so it will work until 
long after the general release. You can do your clean install once, buy Win7 
when it comes out, and not have to pay for Vista.

Now, Tom is going to splutter and fume and start hyperventilating because we're 
suggesting that you use a beta version of Windows. He would have been right if 
we'd suggested this in December. But the current beta is already rock solid, 
and RC1 is the release candidate--the version that will be sold as Windows 7 
with only the most minor of tweaks. Millions of people, including my son, are 
using the current beta every day. A number of people at my office have been 
using Win7 since the day the *first* beta was released. I don't use it every 
day, but I have used it a lot and haven't seen a single problem. No one is 
having any difficulty at all. Some earlier Windows betas were pretty bad, but 
Win7 has been trouble-free.
