You know it clearly amazes me the lack of insight many folks have.
Many folks do not FEAR a reinstall, they just do not like it. It is frustrating and time consuming.
I have had to do reinstalls. Just not my cup of tea, and if I can avoid it, I avoid it.
I have done many upgrades over the years, and many of them (75% and above) have gone smoothly.
Occasionally there is the one that is an upgrade from hell. Those just take more work.
But no one that I read FEARS an reinstall, they just do not like the time wasted reinstalling all their stuff and getting their system to where they like it once more.
By the way with registry stuff and programs, backups do not do it anymore. Backups for Data is fine, but programs cannot be backed up.

I sure wouldn't recommend a casual user - especially one that fears reinstalling a few apps - to install a RC version of Windows 7! At most it will be good for a year, at which point they would likely need to do a clean install again. I mean, who would trust an upgrade to an RC, even if that path was made available? Not me. If that computer is really new, there's no way I would settle for XP. I'd demand Vista Home Premium. What I really can't understand is how many people seem to fear reinstalling. Clearly they don't trust their backups, but instead of fixing it they'll just wring their hands in abject fear for years on end.
