Actually there are two different models being talked about here.
Apple makes money on two different components. Hardware and Software.
They sell their OS for a smaller amount as they make more money (I
have never seen a comparison but I bet it is provable) on their
hardware. (I was told by an insider that Apple does not loose money
on the Iphone, it is ATT that looses the money) Yes they make money
at Itunes and the App store, but that is mostly selling a service.
Therefore they can sell upgrades for a smaller amount.
MS makes most of it's money on Software, not hardware. (We all have
seen the shots back and forth on the Xbox, Zune etc. However these
are not their bread and butter.)
Therefore it has to generate a lot of it's profit from selling software.
Should it sell it for the amount it does? That is a whole other story.
There has been no talk at this point on price points, but I think I
read somewhere that they will not try the disastrous multi level
versions that plagued Vista.

Apple is charging what they can get for it...I suppose MS will do the same.
