If you've been watching the mythbusters, you know that a book will not
stop a bullet, except maybe a .22.
It their test, a 400 page hard cover book did not stop anything larger
than a .22. I'm sure a phone would not.

In the old days we used to carry a pocket-size bible for such
purposes. I doubt the iPhone would stop a bullet.
