Yes, I would run a SMART check on the disk before going to that trouble. But really, 100G is small by today's standards, so I'd probably replace it anyway. $65 will get you 320G in a 2.5" drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145256).
