The problem appears to have been the RAM. All appears to be working fine now with the 2-256MB chips. Thanks to all that responded with their suggestions.

I am now on my third time reinstalling to factory build. It now no longer goes past the Windows XP setup screen. I'm giving up for a while. I'll be swapping out memory, hd, etc. to try to get this thing working again. It had 2-512MB chips in it, and I've replaced them with 2-256MB chips. Running out of ideas. It might be time for a new notebook. When it was working, Task Manager didn't show anything outside of the ordinary.
