That sounds counter-intuitive... like you had a corrupt email client or something... Clients would always be technically faster than any kind of web service... and your webmail would be operating over the same DSL line to boot.

Yes, mostly spam, but they are so easy to deal with in a fast email
client
as compared to using web mail.
