Clearly you're confusing gmail's threaded view with Outlook's old
Subject view. I know superficially they may be similar, but not once
since I switched have I ever had a desire to turn off threaded view. I
have, however, seen different sorts requested of gmail from time to
time, but to read all their explanations it just sounds like they're
just unfamiliar with the concept of filtering. Or changing Subject
when replying.

Still, gmail isn't the only AJAX capable email out there, and I
believe the others like Yahoo and Hotmail, perhaps lacking as good a
threaded view, do offer more sorting options.
