No, I'm not confusing it, but they are functionally similar. It's just a preference, that's all. I'm not passing judgment on whether one works better than another, but the better mail clients will give the user multiple options on how they want to view their messages, instead of assuming that one size fits all or making you jump through tagging and sorting hoops.
