I've never known Dell or anyone else to invalidate its warranty because someone opened the case of the "big box." The whole idea of the PC is that it is "expandable" by adding hardware in the "expansion slots." I've never known a computer manufacturer (except maybe Apple) that required that you purchase the house brand of hardware to put into any expansion slot (or to add a docking station in a 5-1/4 inch drive bay.
