What are some examples of something running that needs .net? A Windows
message said unable to install .net framework 3.5 update and an error
message 0X643 was noted.

Most recently developed Windows software has .NET as its basis. However,
anything you currently have should continue to work (it won't need the very
latest version of the framework), unless you uninstall .NET altogether.
I looked in the Control Panel on my computer, and saw that there is a 3.0
version of the framework and it's up to the 2nd service pack. Perhaps you
should try to install 3.0. Then maybe 3.5 won't have a problem.
BTW the term ".NET" is one of Microsoft's many failures in communication
with its customers. The terminology wrongly suggests some specific tie-in
to the Internet, implying that you won't need it if you don't use IE.
".NET" actually represents a revolution in Windows programming. The key
component is the CLR ("Common Language Runtime") which replaces (and is a
vast improvement over) the old Windows API, although I suppose it still
falls way short of the Apple equivalent.
How do you know the installation failed, did Windows Update give an error
message?
