They did show the student a copy of the photo back in November of 2009 when he was called to the office of the school principal. His parents were also consulted at or about that time, and decided back then to put the issue to rest after seemingly convincing the school that they were Mike & Ike candies, not drugs. However, in January of 2010, the parents found out that the school had not dropped the issue, and that a report about drug use by their child as caught on camera remained in the student's file and had even been updated to reflect suspected drug activity and contained no mention of the meeting with the parents where it had been made clear that no drugs had been involved. Upon this revelation, and the refusal of the school to purge that data from their file on the student, the parents decided to take the actions that have transpired.
