“"piece count" means the number of figures in the dance. “

 

It is actually a little more subtle than that.  Back to Larry Jennings and 
Zesty Contras again!

 

“Piece count: A measure of the difficulty of a sequence.” “The piece count is 
an estimate of the number of dance fragments which an “average” dancer must 
keep in mind to visualize the complete sequence. … a combination of basic 
movements which occupies one 8-count or 16-count phrase may also count as just 
one piece because it is familiar or has “obvious” flow. … the piece count is 
both subjective and dependent on what is familiar in the … area.”

 

              A good “story line” can also help a dance.

 

              In Zesty Contras Larry gives his view of the piece count for 
every one of the 500 dances, plus a selection of 20 letter codes that help to 
characterise the dance.
