can you do the following as root
touch /var/log/httpd/mail.log
chown www:www /var/log/httpd/mail.log
after installing the contrib and try again to send using your php app ?
you can then send the content of messages log again and also a sample from
/var/log/httpd/mail.log (you can hide confidential data)
