Ok------- have done this and it freezes at:

in second stage install

ctrl-alt-F2:  #  and a blinking cursor

ctrl-alt-F3:  second stage install running
                 extra messages are enabled

ctrl-alt-F4:  VFS: Mounted root (ext2 file system)
                 Install uses obsolete /proc/pci interface
