alsamixer is screwy. It's probably about as bad a design as you can get from a sane person (making a wild assumption here). There's the PCM, which affects front channel, wave surround which affects rear channel, and then other sliders that mangle the effects of PC and wave surround so as soon as you think you have it figured out you find a setting that totally confuses you again. and Master is not the master. :) -- Murray J.
