No problems here. If I use mplayer -xy 2 video.mpg 
and switch from fullscreen to windowed mode with f, I get the desired
effect of a window with double x and y dimensions. The same happens if
I use mplayer -nofs -xy 2 video.mpg.

Maybe you don't have xv or it's a bug. For me the default
configuration is working fine.
