I too have a Hauppauge WinTV card (the el cheapo $49 one without stereo).
I could never get my old STB TV PCI to work (got picture but no sound), so
I dumped it for the more Linux-compatible Hauppauge. It works great, but
setting it up was not automatic. Also, it's touchy. I need these lines:

alias char-major-81 bttv
options bttv vidmem=0xd60
pre-install bttv modprobe tuner

in conf.modules to get it to work. I recently flashed the BIOS on my
computer, and afterwards a few PCI devices had their addresses change.
The WinTV card stopped working until I went into conf.modules and changed
the vidmem address. (Oddly, when the system failed to work, it told me
what the new, correct address should be. If it can figure out the address
itself, why do I need to tell it the address? And I do need to, it doesn't
work if I don't have that line in conf.modules. Strange...)
