I agree with that. Furthermore there should be some standard locking procedure that all apps that mess around in ~/Mail or ~/Maildir use.
well probably those same software have to lock in /var/spool/mail
so we either have to use a setgid lock executable like procmail's
lockfile or use fcntl.
IIRC fcntl works even on nfs with rpc.lockd, but i don't know if
lockfile is nfs safe (it should link the lock to the locked file to be
so).
