Well I dont have any religiuos loathing of uw, it is just that
I have used uw a lot and I don't particularly like it.
Dovecot is the best replacement I found which does not require to change
mailbox format.
It has the advantage that it is configurable, so my idea was:
- we use dovecot (or anything that is found to be suitable) configured
to behave like the current uw.
- we deprecate using ~ as mail root, but we allow admins to change the
behaviour (by providing a script to do so), but we do not force it.
- in a future release we switch the default behaviour.
David Walser raised another issue with the new proposed scheme. If one
updates uw, and it doesn't move to ~/whatever, and updates squirrelmail,
which now expects ~/whatever, then what happens?
Well, if we want to support other imap servers than uw we would run into
this problem. (only uw uses ~). But squirrelmail is configurable, so
people just have to do it, and if people ignore config.php.rpmsave they
are borked anyway.
Guiseppe? Seems like any approach to this change creates more issues than
it fixes.
Current squirrelmail (as horde) doesn't expect ~/whatever. It have an
empty mailsubdir, like any other existing (even non Linux) mail client.
it can be configured, and i expect some savy admins to have done so,
well i did.

I believe that it is perfectly legal to change a default settings, if
users have the option of keeping the old behaviour, i don't think it is
nice on forcing that behaviour on users.
If i have some time i'll try to patch dovecot to use ~/.mailboxlist (as
an option), then i would be glad if some uw users would give it a try
and report how they fare....
