Yeah, after reading this email that was my immediate reaction :).

I'll see if I can test it out on my systems (if necessary just by
manually setting all channels to 66). I guess the only way to deal with
this is a database of which channels to mute on which cards, ouch - that
really ought to be something ALSA do themselves :\
