this is difficult to guess without market shares of sound cards, % of
their users who use linux, % of who use mandrake, % of alsa users vs
oss ones, ...

what i believe is that this quirk will work fine for some models that
covers quite a lot of users.
eg: i810 and its derived models (ie nforceX chipsets) are quite common
(i think that nvidia got 30-40% of mb sales (mainly cheap ones of
course) with it).

let's look the fact: sb live & the like are more expensive models,
less common[1]

lacking knowledge, the only thing we're sure is that some part of sb
live users will have problems :-(

i only hope that on the overall, there'll be less angry linux users
complaining about "linux does not support my sound card", "i still get
no sound after setting X & Y channels", ...

i fear that regarding sb live, there'll always be people with noise
because their configuration uses different link scheme :-(

like me :-(

and also add lacks of hw, ...

yes, same problem with older btxxx chipsets where lot of vendors uses
the same id & eeprom contents with different signals routing on the
card, ... such problems are quite hard to properly fix for
everybody...

we may try to mute back this one after unmuting everybody.

but i really don't think it's a good idea to add snd card detection
into sound module in order to only workaround sb live :-(

:-)

[1] still the same lacks of figures (is what is true for the whole
market is still true regarding linux users ? ...)
