If you don't use core files for debugging, it's probably wise to turn them
off.  See the ulimit builtin from BASH, and the entry in /etc/profile.   
Note that the default is no core files, and the profile entry turns them
on for root, with a limit of 1,000,000x1024 bytes!!  With a 5G /, you are
lucky it was only 7.8M, instead of closer to the nearly a gig limit!

Here, I commented out that line, so root doesn't create core files either,
as all they'd do is waste space. If I happen to be troubleshooting a bug
where I've been asked to retain them, I can always change that then.
Meanwhile, I don't have to worry about the space they might take.

..  Perhaps this default should be changed.  People that can use core
files should know how to change the setting.  However, for the
average MSWormOS switcher, the current settings could be an invitation to
disaster, particularly as this is set for root, meaning it can eat into
the emergency system recovery reserve.  I'd say let them remain off by
default, but at least limit their size to something more reasonable, say
100M or less!
