See the ulimit builtin from BASH, and the entry in /etc/profile. Note that the default is no core files, and the profile entry turns them on for root, with a limit of 1,000,000x1024 bytes!! With a 5G /, you are lucky it was only 7.8M, instead of closer to the nearly a gig limit! Here, I commented out that line, so root doesn't create core files either, as all they'd do is waste space. If I happen to be troubleshooting a bug where I've been asked to retain them, I can always change that then. Meanwhile, I don't have to worry about the space they might take. .. Perhaps this default should be changed. People that can use core files should know how to change the setting. However, for the average MSWormOS switcher, the current settings could be an invitation to disaster, particularly as this is set for root, meaning it can eat into the emergency system recovery reserve. I'd say let them remain off by default, but at least limit their size to something more reasonable, say 100M or less! -- Duncan - List replies preferred. No HTML msgs.
