I choose expert so I can have finer granularity when choosing packages.
I need some comm stuff but don't need Xmodem or Ymodem stuff. I'm also a
developer but I'm a guts kinda-guy; I don't do eye candy so I can toss
all the (large) GUI stuff too. Just what _I_ do, I don't expect everyone
on the planet to do the same.
I'd hazard to guess that most people who choose expert are in the same
boat - they just want finer control over what gets installed.
