Actually if you run the Gears demo from a shell, it will tell you the
frames per second.

The place I first noticed it was the opening screen of Quake III.  (One of
the games I had constant struggles with until reciently.) MUCH faster
handling of the opening graphic.  After that, I ran the test just to see
how much of an increase the new kernel and driver made.  I was very
impressed!
